| Working and treatment of
Terbinafine - Lamisil |
Terbinafine or Lamisil is used in treating the fungal infections of
fingernails and toenails. Terbinafine or Lamisil is prescribed in
cases of fungal infections.
Prior to the treatment the appropriate nail specimens should be sent
for laboratory tests to confirm the growth of the fungus. The
treatment should be initiated only after the lab tests are taken.
Lamisil tablets 250mg should be taken once daily for around six
weeks by patients who have fungal infections of finger and toenails.
Terbinafine hydrochloride is a synthetic allylamine derivative. It
works against the biosynthesis of ergo sterol an essential component
of the fungus cell membrane. Terbinafine thus acts effectively
against the fungal growth.
Terbinafine or Lamisil is generally a safe medication. But if one
has any allergies it has to be told to the doctor prior to the
treatment. Though it is a safe medication it is advisable not to
take these medicines during pregnancy. The fungal treatment can be
postponed after delivery. Breast feeding mothers are not supposed to
use this medication.
The medication passes on to the breast milk and might have adverse
effects on the infant. However if one is already under any other
medication he is supposed to discuss it with his doctor. Lab tests
should be performed regularly to check the progress and also to keep
a watch on the side effects.
